In 2025, MSM Ocean designed, manufactured and deployed the first tsunami detection and early warning buoys in the Ionian Sea, within the Mediterranean Basin, for the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV).
The system is based on EBM24TS elastomer buoys, specifically engineered to operate under demanding offshore conditions. These instrumented buoys enable real-time measurement of the pressure exerted by the water column at great depths through Sonardyne’s Bottom Pressure Recorder (BPR) — MSM Ocean’s technology partner — and securely transmit the data to the INGV Tsunami Warning Centre, strengthening the region’s capacity to respond to natural hazards in the Mediterranean.
This project represents a technological milestone in Europe and reflects MSM Ocean’s commitment to delivering advanced ocean monitoring solutions.
